Royal Napp - for all the mixtures except the rinse, what I do is pour the solution in my hair, rub them into my scalp and then cover my hair with a plastic cap and leave in for fifteen minutes to a half hour. For the rinse, I usually leave in for 15 minutes since I am usually doing this on a week day and you know with going to work and everything, time is at a premium.
Don't be impatient when using the powders, just work with them to find the right cleaning and moisture balance for your hair. Your hair will love you for it. Remember you hair is a natural substance and responds best to natural products.
God Bless!

I saw two different brands of Amla powder @ the Indian store I go to...don't even ask me to pronounce the brand names (I couldn't even READ the names!)...Both boxes were the size of a deck of cards...one was $1.99 and the other was $2.99. Both had instructions (in english ) on the back on how to wash your hair with it...however I decided to get the Vatika hair oil instead.

I opened up the top and BOY!!! WHEW!!!!! It has a VERY strong coconut scent...I applied it to my single strand flat twists, and it made my twists feel so silky! I will definitely add this to my growing list of products I use.

Thanks for the information... I did do some research on the shikakai powder, alma powder, and the aritha powder. THese powders are indian powders that have been used for generations. The shikakai powder does darken your hair a bit but it is said to be very good, especially for those who experience dry scalp, otherwise known as dandruff. The website was extremely helpful and they even suggested a natural conditioner to soften and manage your hair after using this shampoo rinse. The conditioners combines ACV, infused with natural herbs of rosemary and neem. For those who are looking for the powders needed for the rinse, you might want to check out your local indian stores, health food stores, or your local farmers market. Kim

You know, I read this thread out of curiosity since I've never heard of these products before. I was tempted to try them but DAMN that's a lot of work!! I'll stick with my 1/2 inch a month gain.

much thanks gettingthere for starting this thread. all the info here from posters has been extremely helpful, too.
i see the soapcrafting.com was formerly fnwl and i have ordered from the site a long time ago. they take money orders so that works for me. whole foods stores also carry the betterbotanicals line and there is a store near me.
looks like i will be checking out some natural good stores and the indian gocery this weekend. lovely

Aparrently Shikakai is a big thing. I might try it when I run out of my rosemary shampoo. Actually i found a pre-mixed power for 2.99 so I might try it next week! It has Reetha, Amla, and Shikakai powder in one.

Question
How does this work with locks.
I have tried the powders and when rinsed they left a residue.
... That mysteriously dissappeared the next day.
I kid you not.
I dont know where it WENT, but gone is gone.
What about for lock wearers?

The proper use of the powders is to brew a tea with them. After the tea cools, you strain the powders out using cheesecloth to separate the powder from the liquid. Only the liquid is used on your hair. You simply rub the liquid on your scalp and let liquid remain in hair for at least 15 minutes.

I went back and read the entire forum. Thanks "GETTINGTHERE" for your feedback and information..
You stated
"To make the shampoo using the shikakai, amla and aretha powders, use 3 cups boiling water to 1 tablespoon each shikakai, amla and aretha powders and let steep for 1 hour. Strain through cheese cloth."
OOPS!
I was using 1/2 BOX of the powder, with just enough water to make a thick paste. It was thicker than chocolate syrup. And heavier than mud..
LOL
Ah well, live and learn.
I will stick with your recipe and see how that works. May save some money too. As each box was only lasting for TWO 'shampoos' LOL
